My sister and I had a friendly wager of working out for the month of January. The rules were something using body weight and something for the core each day. Anyone that browses the msn and yahoo walls for clickbait knows there are thousands of articles on tips for workout challenges with a timeframe to see results. She elected for Navy Seal Burpees and I think went from under 10 reps to 30 reps.
Now I’ll focus on myself and state my workout routine. I decided to do at least pushups and crunches everyday. Most days I tried to do jump roping, and calisthenics. As I did this I learned from the msn and yahoo clickbait articles. In an effort to keep this short and snappy I’ll use bullet points for the exercises I added.
-
Body weight squats. Now that I do them I see how they could help with skating.
-
Elbow planks: feel the burn as your body shakes.
-
Bicycle crunches. Helps get the motion of getting your knees to your chest, which is essential for pop.
-
Leg lifts for lower abs.
-
Siting on feet and alternatively sitting on heals. At a yoga for skaters class I took a few summers ago I learned this can help with ankle strength and flexibility.
-
My jump roping routine included 6 speed rope variations, and then a heavy jump rope.
Overall for the month I did not lose weight. I went from around 10 pushups with push up bars to 23 two weeks later. I had a wrist injury from last summer, and had not done regular pushups since then. Mid month I tried and was able to do them. On January 31st I cranked out 30, which according to the internet is not bad for a 46 year old man. The days I did the jump roping and calisthenics it got to be a half hour work.
I feel agile and stronger. I will continue to work and and plan to jog soon. More importantly the forecast is good for Sunday, I may get to skate and see if there is a difference. Lastly, how does one get paid to write crappy little topical pieces for msn and yahoo. I feel I could do that. But they’ll probably have AI write those soon.
