I read a few definitions online of Agnosticism and Atheism. My understanding of it is Agnostic tolerates the choice of others by not denying religion. Atheism denies any type of religion. They hate organized religion, and judge others for their personal beliefs. Agnostics simply state they do not know if there is a god, and at same time do not practice any religion themselves.
Growing up we went to church perhaps once a year around Christmas. I wasn’t sure what type of christianity we practiced until I was a teenager and my mom told me we were methodists. Even today I’m not sure what the differences are between the various types of christianity. I never studied the bible. I’ve only thought of reading it to have a better understanding of literary classics. I was always skeptical of the fantastical stories that people took for the word of god.
In my case I’m most likely not going to take the time to read the bible, or study any other religion. In that respect I’m agnostic out of kind of a laziness. I don’t ponder big questions. When I go into a room, and turn on the light switch I don’t think of the mechanics and inventions that made that possible. I’ll simply be able to see better and maybe read a book.
Like an atheist I do think religion has caused harm to the would. A lot of wars have been fought over religions and ideologies. Religion has stood in the way of progress with almost every new invention. Religion creates an us versus them mentality.
But, on a personal level religion can give people hope, a network, and a reason to live. In serious trauma of things like addiction, and grieving that support group helps. The 12 step plan of AA is based on religion. When people die those left behind get relief that their loved ones are in a good place in the afterlife. Years ago I had a discussion with a friend. I was doubtful one could have ethics without religion. With vice I noticed religious people always appeared to be more in control. My friend I debated stated it was possible to have ethics without religion it’s called laws and doing the right thing. I’m still not so sure. I’ve also known religious people that are more humble and courteous to people that cross their paths.
My dad used to say communism failed because they did not allow religion. I tend to agree, personal choice is a must for people to be happy. People get happiness through many ways, and for many that is being part of a religion. The United States is kind of messed up right now, but we still have it better than so many because of the constitution allowing freedom of religion, and the press. The diversity of people and ideas has stamped our popular culture as the world leader.
I didn’t necessarily get this from my online research, but to me to be Agnostic is accepting other peoples choices on what they want to be. Below is a screen shot taken from wikipedia that shows the percentage of the world’s population and their religious believes. Look at number three.
